Special guest Ethan Hawke thanked the companies and individuals who had so warmly welcomed his mother into their midst and he encouraged the dinner guests to commit personally to being “part of the solution” by equipping a poor kid for school or even “Adopting a School” in a poor neighborhood. The Halloween Charity Ball at Palatul Parlamentului on October 31 raised €357,000. American Ambassador Mark Gitenstein, appointed by U.S. President Obama, spoke eloquently about the irony of when we say one thing about our aspirations for the disadvantaged, but our actions express something else. He noted that “education is closely linked to development and nothing means more to the future of Romania than raising the median level of education”.
Our gamble to forgo the traditional Live Auction in favor of Community Actions paid off. Four companies each committed to Adopt a School: Carrefour, E.ON, and Prospectiuni. Three companies committed to sponsoring Summer Schools: Petrom (for four summer schools), Raiffeisen, and Rosia Montana Gold Corporation. Over 100 guests made a donation of 50 euro or more to help a child succeed in school.
Ovidiu Rom also recognized the Major Investors in Fiecare Copil in Scoala that have donated over 100,000 euros to this initiative: Athenee Palace Hilton, Pepsi, ProTV, and Rompetrol, and Citi, its longest running sponsor.
