In December 2019, OvidiuRo launched, with Kaufland România support, a pilot project that encourages parents with young children to read aloud with their toddlers – ever since they are born. By launching ‘Punguța cu 2 cărți’ (The 2-Books small bag), OvidiuRo expands its literacy-based interventions in disadvantaged areas from 3 – 6-year-old children to very young children (0 – 3-year-old), aiming to raise the reading environment at home, for at-risk children – as research shows that the more words a baby is exposed to, the better prepared he is to start reading on his own eventually.
‘Punguța cu 2 cărți’ project offers poor parents in disadvantaged communities a kit of two picture books to take home and read aloud with their babies. In order to make parents aware of the benefits of reading together, over 60 preschool teachers will organize, at the beginning of 2020, reading sessions in their kindergartens, where both parents and children are invited to join. The teachers participating in the pilot-project were trained by OvidiuRo within two forming sessions – held in Vrancea and Neamț counties in December 2019. Each kindergarten teacher received a trainer kit, and also book kits for 5 families that will attend the reading aloud sessions.
By the end of January 2020, a total of 300 poor families in 20 counties and the Republic of Moldova will receive the ‘Punguța cu 2 cărți’ kit and will attend two reading aloud sessions in their community. In 2020, OvidiuRo’s objective is to expand the program at the national level, so that more and more poor families get quality picture books in their homes and start reading with their toddlers.
