The 2019 edition of Sotron Summer Programs has ended! In total, 6,000 children age 4 – 6 participated in 480 Summer Programs – an educational module designed and supported every summer by OvidiuRo. 1,200 teachers in 37 counties have volunteered to run daily sessions in kindergartens, for two weeks, after participating in over 50 regional, county, and local trainings held in June by OvidiuRo. The number of teachers participating in this year edition has almost doubled compared to 2018. The project was possible thanks to Fildas – Catena Group, Raiffeisen Bank Romania, and GlaxoSmithKline Romania, three of OvidiuRo’s main investors.
The Sotron Summer Programs aim to offer less advantaged children rich summer learning experiences while providing teachers the opportunity to practice the activities that had been introduced in the trainings. Every year starting 2001, the activities are supported with quality educational materials provided by OvidiuRo.
In total, 18,000 picture books were distributed during July and August 2019 – books for kindergartens and books for children, to take home; this strong literacy component naturally continued OvidiuRo’s efforts starting 2016 to improve children’s vocabulary by enhancing the kindergarten and home literacy environment, in disadvantaged communities.
This year, the Sotron Summer Programs also included a science component based on STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Maths), with the support of Raiffeisen Bank Romania – continuing the successful 2018 Povesti sub Lupa project. From magnifying glasses maps, magnets, germination kits, or geometric sets to non-fiction books, both children and teachers were engaged in a large range of activities and experiments, for two weeks.
